Underwater Photo Workshop at Blue Heron Bridge, Florida
When I bought my new camera and housing rig, Olympus OM-D EM-1 with 12-50mm zoom macro lens
and Nauticam
housing plus lens port
plus 45 degree viewfinder
plus Nauticam
Super Macro Converter (closeup lens)
,
(the Light & Motion Sola 800 focus light
and Inon S-2000
strobe came from my old rig).
Reef Photo & Video
threw in attendance at one of their regular workshops. The workshop includes three dives, which have to be timed around high tide, and classroom presentations on photographic theory and using Adobe Lightroom for processing your photos. I had never used Lightroom before and this slideshow represents the result of trying it. There were 13 participants in the workshop, one instructor and three dive guides (really helps to find stuff).
Blue Heron Bridge
, near Palm Beach, connects the mainland with an offshore island.
That's Phil Foster State Park
in the middle, you park there and dive under the bridge to either side.
You do have to be a little careful of boat traffic, fisherman (and their hooks) and the many jellyfish in the water.
This is a "muck" dive, meaning it's not pretty underwater but you have a reasonable chance of seeing some unusual creatures. It's shallow, I never went below 22 feet, so dives are long; my longest dive was 2 hours 8 minutes. The water is not particularly clear and gets much worse when the tide shifts and the flow begins.
I was mostly concentrating on getting used to the new camera and rig, getting exposures correct, etc., and only occasionally remembered to concentrate on the actual photo. I also learned that I needed some serious buoyancy for the rig as it was quite heavy underwater, so I've added two float arms.
On to the photos!
